A CAMADA DAS PEGADAS |
THE FOOTPRINTS LAYER
The layer where the footprints are preserved, consists of marly limestone and is in a sub-horizontal position. Its surface is irregular due to the passage of several dinosaurs, causing a disturbance of the sedimentary layer by the movement of these animals, thus indicating a trampling activity by dinosaurs, called "dinoturbation". The tracks are arranged regularly, according to a preferential direction (roughly from north to south). These tracks were made by sauropod dinosaurs, probably by diplodocids or titanosaurids, the latter very common in the Cretaceous.

JAZIDA PALEONTOLÓGICA DA PRAIA DA PAREDE |
PALEONTOLOGICAL SITE OF PRAIA DA PAREDE
At Praia da Parede (São Pedro do Estoril), several sauropod dinosaur tracks are visible in the intertidal zone (between tides), imprinted on a layer located near the sea, in an area often covered by sand. This layer of fossiliferous limestone (with fossils) was formed at the end of the Lower Cretaceous, in a low-energy tidal environment, in a shallow, open to marine conditions. In the different layers of Praia da Parede several fossils have been found of marine animals (fish, whelks and bivalves) that lived there about 100 - 105 million years ago. Some of these animals are already extinct, such as the ruddy bivalves, while others, such as the pectinids, the group to which the current scallops belong, still survive.

OS DINOSSÁURIOS DA PRAIA DA PAREDE |
THE PRAIA DA PAREDE DINOSAURS
As mandíbulas apresentavam dentes tubulares e lisos.
The sauropods were the group of the famous, gigantic, herbivorous dinosaurs, with long, flexible tails and necks and small head. They were the largest animals that ever walked the Earth. Their jaws had smooth, tubular teeth. The body was massive and supported by four legs, which worked as if they were authentic pillars. Being so large, these animals needed to ingest a lot of food; comparatively, they occupied the place that elephants occupy in today's faunas. Like them, or certainly even more, they must have devastated large areas of forest. Their long necks gave them the advantage of reaching the leaves on the highest parts of the trees, inaccessible to other herbivorous dinosaurs. As a group they were quite successful and lived on almost every emersed land mass on the planet from the Lower Jurassic to the end of the Cretaceous.
